Of Art and Block Island

There’s an inspirational feel to Block Island. An alluring quality that’s continued to draw writers and artists of all crafts and styles all year round. The crash of the waves on the shores all around promote creativity. The trails and trees, the wildlife on the ground and in the air, paint pictures in nature that practically beg to be translated onto the page or canvas.

We have a host of galleries and studios to act as showcases, but even they can only manage so much. If you want to see everything that Block Island has to offer, you’ll be in for quite the time. This week we decided we would get you started right.

While winter and off-season hours vary, the following galleries are always open by appointment.

Greenaway Photography

Focusing camera

Water Street, PO Box 506, Block Island, RI 02807
(401) 466-5331
mgreenaway@verizon.net

Started by Malcolm Greenaway 1993, this studio represents exactly the sort of inspiring motivation that Block Island offers. It was after honeymooning with his wife that he felt the allure and beauty of the island. Some 40 years later, his pictures continue to adorn the walls, presenting pristine images of Corn Neck Road, Southeast Light, the Mohegan Bluffs, and everything in between.

Jessie Edwards Gallery

Molding Clay

32 T Water Street/P.O. Bldg Suite 202, New Shoreham, RI 02807
(401) 466-5314
info@jessieedwardsgallery.com

The Jessie Edwards Gallery enjoys the ever-enviable fortune of overlooking historic Old Harbor. Over 30 local and regional galleries and shops are represented here, showcasing a wide range of art styles. With paintings, ceramic work, photography, lithographs, and much more on display, you’ll get the perfect experience that’s sure to keep you coming back for that second and third look. You’ll be surprised at what you missed and be more than happy to revisit some favorites.

Lazy Fish

Painting on the beach

235 Dodge Street, New Shoreham, RI 02807
(401) 497-3526

While more of a gift shop than a traditional gallery or studio, like some of the other entries in this post, Lazy Fish offers something a little different. Here you’ll find a collection of pieces big and small, all of which are crafted with that local – and unrivalled – Block Island touch. What’s more, Lazy Fish also provides various design services, too.

No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll be sure to find something to your liking here during your next ferry ride over.

Photo Dog Art Gallery

Woman taking photograph

189 Water Street, New Shoreham, RI 02807
(401) 466-5858

If photography is more your style, then look no further than the Photo Dog Art Gallery. This one-of-a-kind gallery sits in the perfect spot for you to visit on your way through the collection of other shops. Photographs aren’t the only pieces on display, though. Oil paintings, watercolors, and one-of-a-kind jewelry make up some of the other offerings.

Not only that, you can stock up on your own camera supplies while you’re here, too. Maybe the next wave of Block Island art will be yours!

Every artist’s mind works differently than the next. They see Block Island and its surroundings with a unique vision that’s truly all their own. These galleries are only skimming the surface.

When the warm weather comes back, and the festivals, shops, and stands open up again, that creative talent the people of Block Island will be shown off in full. We’re certainly excited. And until then, we look forward to taking in the wonder and beauty that we call home.
