Basic Beach Bag Checklist… For Block Island

Basic Beach Bag Checklist… For Block Island

It’s a beautiful day in September/October, and you don’t have any plans for the day. “Oh right,” you think, “I never made it to Block Island this summer. Time for a daytrip!” So you call your friends, grab your bag (are you a tote or backpack person?) and throw in your wallet, keys and:

Phone

Phone

Yes, you’ll want to have your phone in order to take pictures, or listen to music—but did you know you can also use it to download the free Block Island app, that has all sorts of good info on the Island: from events, to weather, to deals and emergency info? You can also use your phone to check out QR codes, like the ones for the bike tour, or to see menus at restaurants, and even to check out our onboard video.

Drinks/Snacks/Sanitizer

Drinks, Snacks, and Sanitizer

You’ll need to stay hydrated, so bring your refillable water bottle. Or bring a couple, and fill one with water and the other with your favorite beach quencher. As long as your bottle is insulated, to keep things cool, and leak-proof, you can’t go wrong. Next up, snacks. You don’t want to be on a remote beach on Block Island and get peckish. Plus, you’ll need to keep your strength up for the 141 stairs at Mohegan Bluffs! So bring something to eat, like nuts and granola, or something in its own packaging, like an apple. You can actually bring as many bags on the ferry as you like, so if you feel like packing an entire cooler with fixings for a cheese plate, chilled watermelon, and roast-chicken sandwiches, we won’t stop you. Don’t forget some hand sanitizer to clean your hands before you eat! Better safe than sorry.

Notebook and Book

Notebook/Book

While you’re enjoying some down time, (have you noticed how little of that there seems to be these days?), inspiration may strike. So it’s a good idea keep a notebook on hand to capture your thoughts, or quick-sketch the vista in front of you. Alternatively, you may want to spend some time with a good book. So if you’re planning on parking yourself on the beach to enjoy the sound of the waves and the salty breeze while basking in the sun, bring along that book you haven’t gotten around to finishing, or have been wanting to start, and enjoy. This dynamic duo of notebook and book lets you express yourself AND enjoy the creativity of others.

Towel, Sunscreen, Hat and Sunglasses

Towel + Sunscreen + Hat + Sunglasses

These beach staples are a must. We like a thin beach towel that doesn’t take up a lot of space: the thinner the towel, the faster it dries. Have you seen this beauty, for sale at our concession stands and online? Or consider Turkish cotton towels, which can also double as a sarong or scarf. You’ll need sunscreen, to reapply throughout the day. Pick the SPF that’s right for you, and bring the lotion or spray of your choice. It’s nice to have a squashable sunhat, or baseball cap on hand, too, to keep you cooler during the height of the day. Finally, a comb will keep your tresses tangle free after a dip and time in the salt and the sun!

Regardless of what’s in your beach bag, you’re bound to have a good time on the ferry and on the Island. And if you should forget something, not to worry! There are plenty of places for you to stock up once you arrive, right on Water Street. The important thing is to go!

Pack a bag, and Sail Away…
