Block Island Sights You Simply Have to See
Time off is important. You want to make sure each minute is spent doing things that you enjoy. This is part of the reason why every vacation comes with its own list of things to see and do. Block Island is no different. Whether it’s your first trip or your fiftieth, these sights are well worth making time to see.
The North and Southeast Lighthouse
Every day you’ll find visitors making their way to either of these historic treasures. Of the two, the North Lighthouse can be a bit of a hike. When that hike is along one of Block Island’s beaches, though, is it really a hike? The time practically flies by. This lighthouse is also one of the premiere places on the island to watch a sunrise or sunset. As far as the Southeast Lighthouse is concerned, you can find it right along Mohegan Bluff. There’s no better opportunity to tackle two birds with one stone! Both this lighthouse and its northern counterpart are rich with history and well worth your time.
All it takes is one visit to see exactly why these lighthouses are considered two pillars of Block Island.
Mohegan Bluffs
The Bluffs may be THE must-see view on the Island. All it takes is one long look and you’ll be raving to all your friends about just how beautiful look out point is. There are gorgeously stacked rock towers scattered about as well for visitors to marvel. The bluffs are accessible by bike, meaning you can easily work it into your day. Feel free to climb down the 140-plus stairs to the beach at the bottom and turning a great stop in your sightseeing into an even better day.
Block Island Wind Farm
The past decade has seen the conversation about climate change and renewable energy reach a fever pitch. Since then wind farming has grown exponentially since then, providing around 5 percent of the nation’s electrical energy. Altogether, our five wind turbines have the ability to power nearly 17,000 homes. Not only that, but these turbines help connect Block Island to New England’s power grid for the first time ever, enabling more reliable power for those on the island.
Our wind farm is the first offshore of its kind in America. If any of this sounds interesting to you and you’d like to know more, sign up for a tour! biwindfarmtours.com
The Maze (and Other Trails)
Located three miles from town along Corn Neck Road, Clayhead Trail is a little different from the rest. Even if only for what it offers trail-goers once they reach the spot at the top. This attraction has been aptly named by Block Island locals as ‘The Maze,’ and it’s one that certainly fits. The mix of twists and turns within the series of connected paths allows you to take your time exploring and figuring out the trick for yourself.
Take one of the trails at the base of Rodman’s Hollow and you’ll find yourself face-to-face with Fresh Pond. The peace and quiet here makes it a great spot to relax for a few hours, either with a book or just enjoying the sights and sounds all around you.
The Painted Rock
The origin story of Block Island’s Painted Rock takes us all the way back to 1962. Vandals have come and gone since then, each with their own attempts at spoiling the site for everyone else. The only things they proved was just how thick the layer of history (and paint!) that Painted Rock has. It’s served its community a great deal, continually bringing people together, through either the rock itself, or all the stories people spread every time a new design or image shows up on its surface.
What started as a joke some 56 years ago became a piece of Block Island history.
What are some of your favorite Block Island spots? Is there anything you just have to see every trip?
