Block Island Wind Farm
The past decade has seen the conversation about climate change and renewable energy reach a fever pitch. The topic and potential solutions have been discussed in politics at the national and local level, as seen in this year’s Presidential Debate, as well other campaign platforms in recent years. Wind Farming has grown exponentially since that time and provides around 5 percent of national electric energy. Offshore wind farming has long been discussed as a better innovation, but projects have never been able to get going. That is — until now! Here are some details to know about the iconic Block Island Wind Farm:
The History
This is America’s first offshore wind farm. You read that right. Block Island is home to a pioneer project in national renewable energy! Many companies have tried to get a wind farm like this up and running for years. In the past, it has been met with resistance. From property owners worried about ocean view skylines to congressional policy that protects the ocean floor, the general public seemed worried about the effects of constructing the massive turbines. The structures themselves though, are a marvel to look at and the benefits go far beyond that. The sight of them serves as a reminder of leadership in the future of energy!
The Scope
Most proposed offshore wind farm projects have a huge scope. This project was much more scaled down. The company that led the way, Deepwater Wind, understood the importance of just getting this up and running. Once this project was going for Block Island and New England residents, it would open the door for more opportunities like it. Still, just the five turbines were enough to focus on, each costing millions to invest in and build!
The Jobs
One of the points always touched upon in political talking points about clean energy is the job creation that an industry boom would create. Well, a new energy industry means new industry jobs. In addition to reducing emissions and minimizing pollution, the offshore wind farm will put local people to work. With just the five 30 megawatt turbines, there are expected to be over 300 jobs created in construction and maritime work, by the end of the project. The maintenance and industry growth is expected to keep people working too!
The Clean & Renewable Energy
On land wind farming has led to a boom in clean energy and a change in the way we power our country. Outside of the open western land in Kansas, Oklahoma and Iowa, it’s tough to generate energy nonstop. The wind on land is intermittent and thus the power levels fluctuate. In the ocean, however, the breeze off of the water is steady and much stronger. That makes that classic Block Island gust perfect for generating high levels of clean and renewable energy.
The Community
Along with the distinction of being the first place in the country to actually complete a project like this, Block Island will see some additional benefits. The five wind turbines have the ability to power roughly 17,000 homes. Locals have been supportive of the turbines because of what it means to the energy industry. Additionally, the turbines will connect Block Island to the mainland New England power grid for the first time ever. That means more reliable power for those on the island and as much as 40% less on energy bills!
If these details grabbed your attention, come out and get more in-depth with the Block Island Ferry wind farm tour. The tour runs until 10/8 so if you’re reading this it may not be too late! Take a cruise while you can and get out to see the historic turbines, up close and for yourself!
