Live Like a Local
As great as every trip to Block Island is, eventually you’re handing over your ticket and boarding the Ferry home. But what if it didn’t have to? Along with going over the pictures you took, retelling stories from trips past and present, do you find yourself wondering “What would it be like to live on Block Island year-round? Could I do it?”
While everyone’s case is different, there are a few things to consider before deciding to take the leap.
The first thing to look into when deciding to make Block Island your year-round home as opposed to a seasonal venture is, well, your home. More specifically, where you’re going to plant your roots. Old Harbor is one of the busier neighborhoods, that added attention coming with gorgeous views of the open ocean. New Harbor is only a 15-minute walk from the town’s center and acts as a sort of central hub for the island. If you want to move to the Block to get away from the hustle and bustle of it all, then Corn Neck might be more your speed.
Groceries are essential to living any place on a more permanent basis – unless eating out for every meal is on the table, in which case all the more power to you – and Block Island has you covered. A good number of establishments may close up shop for the winter, but BIG will always be there for you. Block Island Grocery comes with all the food and goods you’ve come to expect from a grocery store, making sure your transition goes smoothly. The same goes for eateries like Club Soda, the Barn at the Spring House, Kimberly’s, and more.
Living in paradise comes with a slew of benefits. A lot of us will still need to find some steady work to make the year-round move a possibility rather than a daydream. Finding a job on the island proper can be a great way to integrate yourself into the community while making a living at the same time.
Freelancing and working from home is an option that’s continued to grow and flourish with steady advancements in technology. In some fields it’s possible to go through 40-hour work weeks without ever having to leave the comfort of your own home. Though no one will judge you for taking that laptop outside, to your favorite island spot, or down to the local coffee shop for a pleasant change of scenery.
Leisure is something Block Island does without breaking a sweat, even if you wind up shedding some yourself. There are dozens of hiking trails and various beaches to explore and experience for yourself, each with their own hidden spots and unique details to make them stand out from the pack. Restaurants, diners, cafes, and the like are dotted all across New Shoreham. Maybe you’re more of a night owl with a taste for a responsible drink or three. The bars around the Block are some of the best on the whole of the east coast, complete with a personalized aesthetic to really put a dot on that I.P.A. Whatever your fancy, Block Island has you covered in spades.
An important detail to remember is that Block Island goes into a bit of hibernation during the winter and off-season months. What it offers is an incredible aesthetic and overall sense of relaxation, as it trims down on some of the traffic and noise that you would have otherwise grown accustomed to from living on the mainland.
Not everything written above will apply to everyone. What it can do, though, is help give an idea of what it would be like to live on Block Island. So what do you think? Could you make a home for yourself on Block Island?
