Couple enjoying Bloody Mary's

The Many Days of Block Island

There’s only so many hours in a day. The saying has been repeated over and over to the point of becoming a cliché. In most cases, it’s in response to an inability to get through everything on your To-Do List. In the case of Block Island, though, each hour spent shapes the next one, and the one after that, and the one after that. This leads to no two days being the same, and every new ferry ride filling your head with possibilities of the day(s) that lie ahead.

There are plenty of ways to mix and match the activities for you to spend your time with on Block Island. Here are just a few.

WHY WAIT?

The bluffs of block Island

Not looking to waste any time? Then head straight for the beach! The closest of them all can be no more than a few minutes from the dock, while others may require a short car or bike ride. These have a tendency of being less occupied than some of the others, making them the perfect spot to cozy up to the breeze and sounds of the tide and get lost in a book. If you’ve packed well, you can even make it a point to set up camp and not have to leave the beach until the sun sets!

For those less-inclined to take to the sand and the sun right away – and you’re not alone – don’t worry, Block Island has you covered too.

TAKE IN THE SIGHTS – TOWN

Shop front

Starting off your day by taking in the sights can get you acquainted with the Island in a way that’s entirely your own. There’s local art galleries and museums run by people with real passion for either their own work, the work of others on Block Island, or the pieces of history that helped shape everything around you into what you see today.

Galleries are a great place to change up the pace of your day and take in some local photographer or artist’s incredible work. In many cases either photos or art prints of all sizes are available for purchase, allowing you to keep a piece of Block Island at home to help pass the time until your next trip.

Block Island also offers a plethora of gift & specialty shops to walk around and explore. Feel free to bring your coffee or snack as you go from one to the other, perusing for whatever might just catch your eye.

DID SOMEONE SAY FOOD?

Friends Eating

Depending on what you decided to start your day with, food should be sounding pretty good right about now. It’s never too early to start planning for what you’re going to eat. You’re going to need fuel to keep your energy – and spirits – high!

If we’re being honest, breakfast is great for any time of day, and the cafes and coffee shops and diners on Block Island. The menus here offer breakfast sandwiches, bagels, and pastries, as well as the classic choices, you’ll be able to get exactly what you want to prepare yourself for whatever your day holds.

While some of these spots have a lunch side to their menu as well, Block Island has a whole other side for restaurants and pubs – for lunch, dinner, and everything in between – to sate that burger, sandwich, and seafood cravings.

During your food search, keep in mind that long lines may be intimidating, but is there any better sign of quality? Whichever restaurant or café you choose, we promise it’ll be well worth the wait.

TAKE IN THE SIGHTS – WILDLIFE

Block Island Bird of Prey

If you’re looking to stay active while enjoying the natural beauty of Block Island’s land and seascapes, there are plenty of nature and walking trails for you to take advantage of. Now that you’ve eaten, you’ll be perfectly suited for the time spent on your feet and enjoying the majesty of the Island. Whether you’re looking for fantastic views from over the cliff-side, if birdwatching is your thing, or you prefer some scenic sights not far from great breakfast or lunch spots, you really can’t go wrong with the host of trails on Block Island.

THE PERFECT END

Boat at sunset

Of course, the perfect day at Block Island is one that doesn’t have an end, but as sure as the sun rises does it have to set. And the Island maintains its beauty and entertainment once the moon dominates the sky.

Late night kayaking allows you to take in the majesty of the moonlit water, taking in the sheer scale of the Island while it’s all lit up. Some of the wildlife will only come out at night, while the glowing coral that grows in the water provides a sight you aren’t going to find anywhere else on the east coast.

As you can see, there are innumerable ways to spend your day on the Block. There’s at least one truth that they all share, though. Every great day on Block Island starts with the Block Island Ferry! There’s only so many hours in a day. How are you going to spend yours?
