Sailors’ Tips: How to Pack the Perfect Block Island Overnight Bag

We talked about this series for a bit before deciding to go ahead with it. “Not everyone going to Block Island needs to know how to dock a boat,” we said. “That’s what we’re here for, after all! We’re aces at that.” So, we narrowed our list of important Sailor Tips down to things you, our riders, and we, the sailors, could use on or off the water.

The first of this series is possibly the most important for our passengers. Most of you, we hope, are taking the ride over to Block Island to stay for the night soon. And, because of that, we’d like to share our crew’s seasoned tips for the Perfect Overnight Bag. Whether with a friend, at a hotel, in an AirBnB, whatever—these things are absolutely essential to getting the most of and having the safest night on the Block.

Charger

1. Your Chargers

Phone charger? Kindle charger? Computer charger? Smart device chargers? Espresso bean in chocolate (you need charging, too) It’s almost like the thing itself comes afterward. Make sure you’ve got your chargers all together, wrapped, and packed in a dry spot.

Sanitizer

 2. Disinfectant + Hand Sanitizer

Gotta have it. Shouldn’t even be a question. Have it, use it. Use it again. As much as we’re all mindful of the things we touch, you just never know! Better be safe than sorry.

Tolietries

 3. Travel-sized Toiletries

They are so much easier to travel with. Light, easy, okay to lose. Make a list of your bathroom essentials, keep the ones that fit in your palm, get mini versions of the ones that aren’t. Your arms will thank you.

Umbrella

 4. Something for the Rain

The Block is a rainy spot in February and the spring. No monsoons, but why not have a light layer or umbrella at the ready. Showing up soggy to dinner is just never fun. We swear it’ll make the soup colder for some reason.

Water Bottle

5. Tumbler

Fill it with whatever you want, but keep it to yourself. It’s for the sake of safety and convenience. Taking a hike? Perfect. Riding our ferry? Great—bring your own water!

Mask

 6. Masks

An absolute given. Bring either the means to clean yours or a new one for the next day.

Book

7. Kindle / Book

Or, maybe even a Switch or something to entertain yourself when you’re under a blanket, relaxing by the fire in your hotel room. The stars are beautiful and so is the salt in the air, but when the sun’s down in winter, fireside sits are perfect.

Headphones

8. Headphones

For the ride over, the ride back, your resolution morning run, your evening-by-the-fire podcast, whatever moment of peace you’d like–headphones will give you the little extra mental space you might need on vacation during a pandemic.

Sweatshirt

 9. Set of Spare Clothes for What You Know You’re Doing + for Something Unexpected

You’re traveling to the Block for a reason. Bring clothes that suit it. If it’s a weekend away, maybe your comfiest, warmest clothes. But, don’t forget to bring just one thing that might work for a spur-of-the-moment dinner out—even if it’s for one!

10. Binoculars

Small ones–small enough to fit in your pocket. You won’t regret having them in-hand on your walks around the island, moments looking out at sea, or spotting a few beautiful sea birds.

There you have it. Ten things you’ve got to bring on your next trip to Block Island! Check back here for more Sailors’ Tips soon!
