Santa Claus is comin’ to The Block
Do you hear the bells? Have you cleaned the chimney? What about some reindeer food? You know those nine magical fellows must be hungrier than the big guy driving…and he’s the one snagging cookies! Lay a little food out on your yard, back porch, or run…er…driveway.
Why? Well, there’s really only one reason you might do that. And, we’re pretty sure you know what it is. But, just in case, cue Sam the Snowman and Mr. Fred Astaire singing—Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town!
We don’t know about you, but we’re a particularly merry bunch around this time of year. Christmas is right up there with the first day of summer, the Fourth of July, and National Bloody Mary Day (January 1).
Really—there’s magic in the air, the family is usually together, the food’s great. People’s faces light up. Remember what Christmas was like when you were a kid? How incredible was it?
You’d make a crazy list of half-baked present ideas. You’d mail it—actually mail it, too. You’d hate December for taking its sweet time to get to the twenty-fifth. Then, you’d toss and turn from bedtime on Christmas eve until five-thirty in the morning, scare your parents awake, sprint to your presents, and lose your mind over the fact that a jolly man had managed to silently drop off just what you’d really wanted.
Growing up kind of knocks that out of us for some reason. Sad, right?
We’re not sure why, but things hop in the way. Schedules start conflicting. Work keeps calling. We say, “I’m tired,” more often. But that’s not what Santa would want!
We shouldn’t give up our wonder! We should be even more ecstatic than we were. Yes…we figure things out. Christmas changes gears a little bit. It’s more about time together and less Rudolph’s eating habits. Absolutely—we do need to make room for the next generation to help! But, we think the magic should stay!
That goes double for this year! It might be a bit more challenging to do it than in years past, but we should bring the Kris Kringle, so to speak. We should try our ho-ho-hardest to spread Christmas cheer. You know—emulate St. Nick, Father Christmas, Papa Noel, or whatever you might call him. Give more gifts than you receive, do nice things for strangers and family members without anyone asking, be anonymously generous as much as you can—if anything, wearing a mask will help!
We at the Block Island Ferry are going full-Santa. Join us! Sail Away to a Happy Holiday and a Merry Christmas with the magic of the season.
