Tricks & Treats & Block Island

There’s an energy in the streets, unique in how it’s seemingly carried on the air itself. A chorus of doorbells, children’s laughter, and excited voices all speaking in unison travels along the paths of concrete and dirt in every direction.

Move closer, past the first glances, and you’ll find another layer. Signs of the season all the same, but embracing a different side. Stacks of well-worn books, the discolored pages adding to the sense of supernatural that lives within their words. The space under the TV is filled with monster movies and ghost stories.

It’s autumn, yes, but more specifically, it’s another Halloween on Block Island!

Halloween PartyWhen you’re thinking of Halloween, it’s only natural to think of costumes and parties, dressing as your favorite character or classic movie monster and having a good time with fun people. Block Island tends to host one or two of these public parties every year. Yellow Kittens is known to throw a good costume party, prizes and all. The Spring House has joined in the fun in the past, with Poor People’s Pub rarely passing up the chance to get involved in the festivities of the season. Things change for one reason or another, so it’s always a great idea to check with their sites and social media pages for exact details.

Kids Eating Halloween CandyIf costumes take up the top spot, then trick or treating and the candy that comes right along with it is a very close number two. Most people may not think of neighborhoods and more standard living spaces when they think about Block Island, but that’s a common mistake. Spending the day on the island gives you the best of both worlds, allowing them to enjoy the unique look and feel of the Block before enjoying some Trick or Treating as soon as the sun starts to set!

All those things are well and good, but Halloween isn’t just about going outside and socializing all night. Scary movies and equally ghost-filled books can get you in the spirit just as fast. They take on a life all their own on the 31st.

Halloween Night SkyWith the spirit of Halloween flowing free, catching anyone and everyone up in the festivities, it can be easy to forget that some of the best ways to embrace the theme and feel of a holiday is by just sitting back somewhere quiet and enjoying it. Whether you’re under the night sky or curled up reading about local haunts or ghost stories. Block Island is home to dozens of these spots and more.

Every season comes with its own collection of activities to be had and memories to be made. And no place is better to experience those seasons than Block Island.
