Autumn Fun for the Whole Family

Autumn Fun for the Whole Family

Take a deep breath. Feel the crisp autumn air revitalize you from the inside out. Summer is great. No one is questioning that. But fall is the satisfactory exhalation before the winter sets in. The rest and relaxation we get through these few months keeps us moving when the snow feels like it just won’t stop falling. And on Block Island, that rest and relaxation has many forms.

Bird on a Tree BranchHave you ever tried birdwatching? If you haven’t, you’re not alone. But you are missing out on one of Block Island’s staples along with some pretty fun times in the process. This is especially true during the autumn months, when nearly one-hundred-and-twenty species of birds make a stop on Block Island on their way to warmer weather. The Wildlife Refuge is a good place to start, with the trails and coast lines rounding out the list.

Block Island Nature ConservancyHiking is especially good in the fall and cooler months. Not only do you avoid dealing with any heat, but the changing leaves and new colors mean you get an entirely different view from the sunnier season. Rodman’s Hollow is nice, with a collection of trails and paths that’ll take you all over the two-hundred-and-thirty acres of woods and shrubbery. The Fresh Swamp Preserve is a preserve at heart, presenting you with an opportunity to catch rare species of animals and plant life that you wouldn’t see otherwise. Then there’s Clayhead Trail, the home of the Maze. But don’t panic. If wandering the Maze isn’t up your alley, there are plenty of branching paths to take you along the bluffs to the secluded beach.

Preparing CoffeeThe island isn’t just great for walking. Sign up for a bicycle tour and take in the sights – both natural and historical – in style. There are still plenty of restaurants, shops, and cafes open during the leadup to the off-season, so that’s always an option. It’s hard to argue with sitting down at a coffee shop, book in hand, steaming cup of whatever drink suits you, and the scents of fall filling your senses.

Every season comes with its own perks. Its own reasons to get excited as the days on the calendar start dropping off. With autumn making its way across Block Island, new doors open up to walk through and experience something wholly different and unique. That’s the beauty of this place we call home.
