Celebrating 4th of July on Block Island
There are a few things that, every year, let you know the summer is officially in full-swing. The scent of charcoal smoke and seasoned meat as it mingles with the salty scent of the ocean breeze. The soothing, rhythmic sound of water lapping at the shore. From afar, the dull orange glow of grills and cookouts that mirror the stars in the night sky. This week, everything will come together in celebration of the 4th of July. The air will be filled with laughter and conversations as families and friends carve out their spots on the beach, everyone eager and ready for the show to start. Nothing epitomizes the summer more than the 4th of July. And nobody does Independence Day better than Block Island.
Block Island Memories
The theme this year is ‘Block Island Memories,’ and what better way to embrace that notion than by gathering your friends and family and making some great memories of your own on the Island?
Kicking off the holiday will be the Annual 4th of July Parade, starting at Veteran’s Park at 11am. Guarantee a great spot by getting there early. Once the last float passes by, the festivities continue over at the Block Island Fire Department. Here, from 12:30 – 3:30pm, all the quintessential Independence Day treats will be whipped up and served for any and all who stop by to celebrate together. Steak, corn on the cob, watermelon and more. This is just one of the options open for you to make this 4th of July the best one yet.
Look to the Skies
While fireworks will be fired off in typical 4th of July fashion, they’ll be done so on July 2nd. The Town Beach pavilion will be hosting Fireworks at Dusk! Live music starts at 7:30pm, with room on the beach for you and your friends and family to set up chairs, blankets, even a picnic, and settle in for what’s sure to be a fireworks celebration worthy of the holiday.
One of the best parts about this show is that it’s viewable from virtually anywhere on the Island. Whether you’re the type who enjoys celebrating with large groups of people, or who prefers the comfort of friends and family and a familiar – maybe even secret? – spot to take it all in, Block Island is the place to be this Independence Day.
Dig In
At the end of the day, the 4th is always more enjoyable when there’s great food being grilled up and passed around. But not just any food. On this day, only the All-American classics will do the trick. Burgers and hotdogs are staples, of course, but there’s always room for steak and sausages over the roaring fire. And the Island has plenty of spots to enjoy them all, whether on the 4th or any other day this summer.
However you decide to spend the day, whatever your traditions may be, this year will be another reminder among many that Block Island remains the best place to celebrate the 4th of July.
