A NIGHT OWL’S GUIDE TO BLOCK ISLAND

Block Island is known for sun and fun. From the beaches to the shopping and restaurants, Block Island is the perfect little summer getaway that’s only an hour away. But just because we’re known for our daytime activities doesn’t mean there’s nothing to do when the sun goes down. An overnight stay on the island affords the visitor a new variety of sights, sounds and experiences!

EVERY RESTAURANT IS A SEASIDE RESTAURANT

That’s not just a cheap marketing gimmick. It’s the truth! If you’re on the mainland and looking to get a table near the water, you could be waiting quite a while. Here on Block Island, every restaurant is a stone’s throw from the ocean!

New Shoreham has many different varieties of cuisines to choose from. Of course, seafood is a staple here, but you can also find everything from filet mignon to sushi to hot dogs on the island. A few of our favorite places are Kimberly’s, Aldo’s, The Surf and Tigerfish. And for you veg-heads out there, most restaurants offer vegetarian and vegan options.

LIVE ENTERTAINMENT

So, you’ve just eaten dinner and are looking to keep the night rolling. Luckily for you, there are several pubs and bars for you to grab some more libations and get down to some live music!

If you’re looking for something a little laid back, McAloons, Captain Nicks and Poor People’s Pub has live music on their respective patios earlier in the evening. For those who need to get up and dance, Yellow Kittens, Club Soda, and Captain Nicks have live music and DJ’s later on into the night.

Most of these businesses also host other events such as comedy nights, bar trivia, and karaoke. Check out their individual websites for schedules and information!

Featuring a wide variety of painters, potters, jewelry makers, photographers (and more), the Block Island Arts & Craft Guild holds events throughout the season. These open-air fairs allow the casual collector to peruse some great art and crafts to bring home with them. Check out their Facebook page for event announcements: facebook.com/BlockIslandGuild

BRING A FLASHLIGHT

Maybe you’re the type that prefers a bit more peace and quiet with your nighttime activities? Just because it’s dark doesn’t mean you can’t explore the island. There’s just something magical about walking along the beach with that special someone, taking in the moon shining off the sea.

For those a bit more adventurous, Pond & Beyond Kayak offers a 3-hour full moon tour of the Great Salt Pond. The tour begins in the early evening with a view of the sunset on the pond. As night falls, glow sticks and lights direct the paddlers around the pond. It’s an experience not to be missed!

Block Island becomes a completely different place to explore when the sun’s gone down. Be sure to get your ferry tickets, book your room, and Sail Away…
